Sponsorship or ownership: that is the question
Talk throughout the NASCAR world, specifically in the Sprint Cup Series sector, on Monday was that Red Bull Racing would be getting out of NASCAR after the completion of the 2011 race season. An “official,” somewhat vague statement released by the team on Monday afternoon, on the other hand, hinted at the energy drink company scaling back its racing agenda, as far as NASCAR efforts are concerned. “Red Bull Racing Team is currently seeking outside investors as we evaluate our next steps in the NASCAR sprint Cup Series. We are not at liberty to comment on details while negotiations are underway. Red Bull fully supports NASCAR and will continue its investment in America’s premier form of motorsports for the remainder of the 2011 season. The team’s focus will not waver as we fight for victories and a position in the 2011 Chase for the Sprint Cup.” The Red Bull team has also found success, at times, in the few seasons it’s been involved in NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition. According to some close to the organization, though, those successes have been too few and too far in between to keep the powers that be at Red Bull satisfied, and that lack of consistent success played a part at Red Bull’s consideration to scale back its NASCAR involvement. Red Bull Racing may get out of Sprint Cup Series racing as a team owner, but Red Bull does seem to be hinting that it may keep an identity on the circuit as a sponsor. While that may mean one less two-car team in the garage on race weekends, when it comes to financials, doesn’t the sponsorship route make more sense for a company than the ownership route, anyway?
