The Journey of Polymyositis: Polymyositis Recovery Begins -Feb/March

The exercises chosen were ones which could be done lying or sitting on the floor, thus preventing any injury.   The pilates are done as shown with some modification on form.  At first the goal was to hold the positions and keep from tipping over; once that was accomplished I focused on trying to get and keep the correct form.  I still have trouble performing the plank correctly, as my toes and ankles still can not support enough weigh.  I stretch back on my knees as far as possible while holding the plank position with my back to accomplish this exercise.  Once I was able to work through the DVD, we added the Wii. Three exercises were selected to begin with,  breathing, rowing squats and the triceps extensions exercise.  The balance board was slipped between the legs of my walker, so I would have support.  Once able to perform the exercise with only finger tips touching the walker, I added another exercise and have continued to add one a week. In March, I stopped using the prescription pain medication and switched to Aleve.  The exercise routine (both the DVD & Wii) must be done daily, as well as trying to perform as many ADLs as possible allowing for as rest breaks in between for as long as needed. I found that one day off, is like taking two steps back and I for one don't want to dance with this disease or recovery.  Don’t lose heart, you will make progress.  After feeling like an ant trying to reach the top of mountain, I am perhaps ½ to ¾ of the way there; preparing my meals, doing dishes, showering, doing laundry, and I just started driving again - short distance only.  Remember it’s not just a battle, it’s a war.  Celebrate the wins and don’t lose heart when you have a set back.  There will be set backs, what with the end of chemo, change in medications and exercise routine, so don’t get discourage.  Consistence in your routine is everything, as is a positive attitude.
