Summerfest Day 5: Kid Rock

Kid Rock finishes off the first half of Summerfest 2011 at 7 p.m. tonight at the Marcus Amphitheater with special guests Sheryl Crow and LeRoy Powell and The Messengers.

Rock's Milwaukee stop is part of his "Born Free" Tour, promoting the release of his eighth studio album by the same name.

The new album promises to show a deeper side to Rock, who is known mostly for his country-infused rap/metal style and less-than-radio-friendly lyrics.

The evolution of his sound, according to Rock's website, was motivated by the hardships felt by his hometown of Detroit. "Watching everything go downhill over the past few years, the economy, the loss of jobs everywhere, I wanted to make a record that reflected the times but that still had soul," the musician said in his online biography.

With the variety of guest musicians contributing to the new album - Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, Bob Seger and rapper T.I. among them - a special appearance is always a possibility. Fans will almost definitely have the chance to hear new tunes from Rock and regular collaborator Sheryl Crow, who is known for her contribution to Rock's song "Picture" and is also featured on "Born Free."

Tickets are $43.35 for lawn seating, $58.75 for uncovered bleacher seating and $69 and $84.35 for covered seating. All prices include fees and admission to Summerfest.
