Summer track: Fun for all at Minooka meet

MINOOKA — A track meet with a toddler 20-meter dash, a family 400-meter relay and plenty of room along the track for spectators — and strollers — to get comfortable in the grass.

Now, that’s a night out for the whole family.

The second of three Indian Pride Track & Field Meets scheduled this summer also had regular events for all ages Tuesday night at Minooka High School, where the competition was friendly and the smiles and laughter lasted throughout the meet.

“A reminder that the winning family relay team tonight wins a pair of fresh watermelons,” the announcer told the crowd while it enjoyed perfect summertime weather.

The Rossi family of Shorewood won the popular relay event in 58.2 seconds, barely ahead of the Wolz family of Channahon, which finished in 59.4. The Rossi clan of Allie, a freshman-to-be at the University of St. Francis, Minooka High School students Maria and Lucia and 2008 Minooka graduate Nick gathered for a picture afterward, holding the watermelons.

“We had some traditional events and then we threw some different events in there for the kids, bring the families out together,” Minooka coach Kevin Gummerson said. “We get a good mix of people who have done the sport before and kids that are trying it out for the first time.”

The toddler 20-meter dash had plenty of the latter, with times ranging from 6.7 seconds to 30 seconds. Three-year-old James Wyatt won the race in a photo finish over 1-year-old Gavin Hall and 3-year-old Kennedy Walker.

“It’s a riot watching them line up, watch them try and stay in the lanes,” Gummerson said. “When you see a kid get the ribbon, they’re so excited about the ribbon. It makes it worth it.”

This is the fourth year of the meets and Gummerson estimated Tuesday’s turnout to be more than 100 entrants, the best so far.

“If you look at the sport, a lot of kids at a young age don’t get much exposure to it, they don’t get a chance to try it,” he said. “That was kind of our goal, just to give kids a chance to try something different, in a low-key environment.

“You never know what your first taste of the sport is going to bring. You get a kid hooked, they may want to continue in it.”

The oldest participant was 54-year-old Tim Graf of Crest Hill, a local speed coach who was second in the 100-meter dash (12.2) behind 16-year-old Luke Stovall (11.7) of Channahon.
