London 2012 Olympics: Phogat sisters are wrestling superstars in northern India
Battles take place on a plate-churned mud, and the pace and the solemnity of a religious ritual. First apprentices loosen the soil with a shovel and level with their feet. Then the fighters arrive. Wearing only a loincloth, they grab handfuls of earth and spread it over their bodies, to make their members slippery and difficult to grasp.
The roots of the sport are so deep that you will find Hindu epics tell great catch episodes of Krishna with the evil king Kamsa. But beneath the surface, radical changes are underway. The women arrived.
At the Commonwealth Games last year in Delhi, a pair of wrestlers from Haryana have won medals. Geeta Phogat, now 22, won gold, his sister, Babita 20, took silver.
These young women were born in the village of Balali, which houses a community of 2000. They started the fight when Geeta was 10, and when she was 12, they traveled to neighboring villages to "get all dirty with the boys," as the Times of India indelicately made. More often than they won.
"We have become very popular in our district," said Geeta."People came specifically to watch us. And I used to love when we heard them saying, "It is the girls who beat the boys."
Rising sisters Phogat is all the more remarkable when one considers the gender policy of repression in Northern India. Statistically, Haryana is one of the richest states in the country, due to its proximity to Delhi. Yet it is also home to some of the most primitive communities of the country. Female infanticide is so common that, on average, there are just 86 women per 100 men.In most villages, arranged marriages are the only marriages and women who leave the system often pay with their lives.
In this context, Mahavir Singh Phogat, himself a former wrestler, has chosen to deal with social convention. Chance played a hand here, because if the woman Daya Singh had given him a son, he surely would have followed the established pattern of village life. It would have left the women to clean the house and milk cattle in those precious hours after dawn cold when he went down to the gym in the village - the akhara - with her little boy.
Mahavir but had no son. So he created a akhara in his own house, digging a mud mat where he could train her daughters in the signing of Kushti moves - the Hindi word for wrestling. He taught them the bridge pin and dismantling, carrying a stick to emphasize his authority.
