Revs hold back Riversharks
The York Revolution do their best to make sure fans get their money's worth each and every trip to Sovereign Bank Stadium. So when the Revs took a three-run lead into the top of the ninth against Camden, a 1-2-3 inning would have been just a little too uneventful.
Instead, relief pitcher Michael Nix worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam by allowing just one run to help York hold off the Riversharks, 5-3, in front of 3,911 fans Saturday night.
The victory kept York within a game of first-place Lancaster with eight games to play in the Atlantic League Freedom Division's first half.
It also helped starter Chris Cody pick up his sixth win of the season, which tied the team lead.
Cody allowed just two runs on seven hits in 61/3 innings -- his longest outing of the season. He threw 52 of his 76 pitches for strikes and did not allow a walk for the first time this season.
The key was simple, he said, efficiency, location and plenty of faith in York's defense, which helped his cause by turning a pair of inning-ending double plays.
"I felt comfortable enough to throw my fastball over the plate and trust that the action would take care of it," Cody said. "I wanted to let them put the ball on the ground, and let my fielders do their jobs behind me.
"We're just a loose bunch; that's the way we've always been. And we've been able to get on a little wave, and we want to try to ride it as long as we can."
While Cody was navigating away from trouble most of the night, the Revs' batters were finding plenty of holes.
York scored in five of its eight at bats, pounding out 15 hits. Four players pounded out multiple hits, led by a 4-for-4 day from right fielder Chris Walker, who got the offense going early.
Walker singled through the hole between second and third in the bottom of the first and moved to third on Ramon Castro's double to deep centerfield. Then Jose Herrera grounded out to second to plate Walker and give the Revs an early 1-0 lead.
Two innings later, Walker led off with a bunt single, moved to third on a Castro single and scored when Herrera hit a sharp grounder off the pitcher's glove for another RBI groundout.
But as has been the case most of the season, York relied on balance to pace its offense.
Nos. 8 and 9 hitters, shortstop Eric Eymann and catcher Octavio Martinez, each collected two hits, including a pair of doubles.
Martinez, who entered the game with just 11 RBIs on the season, also drove in a pair of runs.
