Flash Builder for PHP 4.5.1 Gets iOS Support

IBM i shops that use the latest version of Flash Technology Zend PHP Builder can now build their user interfaces in Flash iOS native applications that will run on Apple devices. Flex Builder for PHP version 4.5.1, which was released last month, allows developers to target all major client devices - including Windows, Mac, Linux and PC web browsers and iOS, Android, Blackberry mobile devices Playbook - with a single development effort.

Zend launches the first version of Flex Builder for PHP (version 4.5) in May.The offer combines Adobe Flex Builder development tool with a full copy of the Zend Studio IDE, allowing programmers to write interfaces based on Flash Black IDE they use to write applications for back-end PHP IBM i, Windows, Linux and other server supported by PHP.

The software based on Eclipse, it is relatively easy for PHP developers to use Flash to power their graphical interfaces. Adobe and Zend have built an integration layer in the software that allows developers to work on projects Flash and PHP in the comfort of a single IDE.

But why would anyone want to start using Flash?There are advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, Flash (formerly known as Flex) offers a rich library of objects that make it fairly easy to build so-called rich Internet applications (RIA) using drag and drop motions. In addition, Flash Player (a layer that is normally required to run a Flash interface) is ubiquitous. It is installed as a browser plug-in more than 99 percent of computers worldwide.

But there are drawbacks. For starters, some believe that Flash websites are boring (they were probably the happiest in front of the screen scratched apps 5250, or 1990-era DOS-like bulletin boards.) But the biggest knock against Flash has been that it doesn't run on iOS, the Apple mobile device operating system that is taking over the world.

This is why the version 4.5.1 update is important. According to Zend's IBM alliance director Michael Scarpato, the new release of Flash Builder gets around this roadblock by using the Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR), a cross-platform runtime that can run Flash applications on any supported device. Since iOS supports AIR, Flash Builder (and Flash Builder for PHP) developers can now target iOS devices with their i OS apps.

"AIR is the Flash technology to run," said Scarpato. "This technology has been extended to run around. So it can run on IOS, Android, Blackberry Playbook. It can run on operating systems like Linux desktop and Mac and Windows. And it can also work in the browser.
