10-story plan floated for site across from Mackey
A Lafayette-based company's plans to build a 10-story building on Northwestern Avenue in West Lafayette is prompting some mixed reactions throughout the city.
City officials emphasized that while those plans are far from finalized, they want to make sure any development in that area -- on the east side of Northwestern, across from Mackey Arena, between Dodge and Evergreen streets -- jives with those most affected by it.
"Let's face it, development in that area is a good idea," Mayor John Dennis said.
"It's a great way to bring money into the city and revitalize the area, but it has to be right for the community. It has to fit into the surrounding area, which is the New Chauncey neighborhood."
BoilerCribs, which owns several apartment buildings near Purdue University, is looking to build an approximately $50 million development on land it owns at that site.
The spot now houses the Stadium Square strip mall and some small, adjacent apartment buildings, company owner Marc Muinzer said Monday.
Those buildings would be demolished to make way for the project. Muinzer said he hoped the current tenants, including a University Book Store, Jimmy John's and a Mad Mushroom pizza restaurant, would move into the planned building.
Its first floor would contain 35,000 square feet of retail space. The rest of the building would contain enough apartments to house about 660 tenants. The development's plans also include off-site parking and a possible underground parking structure.
Muinzer said he envisions the development would provide student housing in an area attractive due to its proximity to athletic and academic facilities -- including Mackey Arena and Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering -- plus restaurants and shopping amenities.
"That pocket there -- the intersection of Stadium and Northwestern -- is arguable the hottest pocket of development and planned development in the Big Ten," Muinzer said.
"There is a massive need for really great student housing in that location."
But residents living in that area balked at the idea of a building that large near their homes.
Some said they worried particularly that a 10-story building with that many apartments would create parking problems and discourage families from moving into the area.
"Ten stories would be totally inconsistent with the neighborhood," said resident Ted Wachs, who lives about 2 1/2 blocks from the proposed development site.
