Rude awakening

WARREN - Cindy Michael had to dodge rain drops Tuesday morning. But she never expected to nearly get smashed by a neighbor's tree falling into her house.

''I heard the crackling. Then I thought, 'Oh my God! Oh my God!' and I heard it fall. It was like slow motion. I didn't see it fall. I just heard it fall,'' she said, describing the harrowing experience about 8:30 a.m.

Michael said she was getting ready to take her grandchildren to school and she ducked outside to retrieve an umbrella from her SUV.

She said 8-year-old Joryan Pizzulo, one of the grandkids, was ready to follow her outside until she sent him back in the house until she got the umbrella.

She said the large silver maple only missed her by a few seconds.

Other grandkids, Alijiah Pizzulo, 10 and Darian Dole, 8, were still inside the home at 331 Central Parkway S.E.

Michael, a staff representative with Council 8 of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), said she ran back inside the side enclosed porch, which got most of the damage, to make sure her collection of bookbags was still in tact and ready for distribution later in the summer for Family Fun Day in Girard.

Michael formed the event in memory of other grandchildren, Mason Cross, 5, and Christian Pizzulo, 1, who were murdered along with their mother Lena Cross, 22, before their bodies were found Sept. 13, 2005, in their flame-engulfed Girard home.

The silver maple wasn't the only tree that fell during the heavy winds and rain that blew in from the north, making for a stormy start to the workday.

Golf ball-sized hail was reported in Geauga and Ashtabula counties along with winds of up to 75 mph. Hail also was reported in Southington and Lordstown.

More trees were downed in Cortland, including a large tree that fell across Heather Lane near the Willow Park area, bringing down a utility pole and blocking a driveway and knocking out power to some homes.

A brief power outage was reported in Newton Falls as well.

Power outages were reported throughout Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties through the day with more than 3,000 customers still without power as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to David Turner, area manager for First Energy.

Some 1,100 of those customers were in Trumbull County, with 900 in Kinsman and 200 more in Warren.

''We had high winds so we had lines that came down and some forestry damage,'' he said.

I have money from the insurance company to get my hood fixed. I made a dumb mistake an bought a hood in just as bad of shape as mine. So now I just want to buy a new hood painted to match. If I can began aftermarket hood painted to match I would be okay with that. Not looking to break the bank on it. But I do have money to spend. I appreciate your help in the search. 06' QC Sport - 3.
