Smaller lakes offer big fun in Tri-Lakes region
Most visitors to Hot Springs flock to Lake Hamilton to enjoy boating, fishing and water sports.
However, if visitors are looking for something a little smaller and off the beaten path, lakes such as Catherine and Norrell might be a good choice.
◊Lake Catherine, according to the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism, is a 1,940-acre lake settled in the Ouachita Mountains.
The lakeshore offers 20 cabins with fully equipped kitchens for lakeside visitors, including one cabin that is fully wheelchair-accessible.
For those looking to rough it, the state park includes 68 campsites.
Park interpreters offer guided hikes, boat tours and more during the summer. A private resort community, Diamondhead is located on the lake as well.
Diamondhead offers an 18-hole golf course, a restaurant and a pool for visitors to enjoy.
◊Lake Norrell spans about 280 acres near Alexander in Saline County. The lake, owned by the city of Benton, and the lake’s surrounding area have become a popular retirement spot. The lake is a drinking-water-protection area.
◊Another Saline County water source, Lake Winona, is available for limited recreational use. The lake’s surface area spans 1,240 acres, according to the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism. The lake, a popular fishing spot, is stocked with bass, crappie and catfish.
The surrounding trails are part of the Ouachita National Forest.
