LMS Grads Set To Move On To High School

Lynnfield Middle School held its moving-on ceremony Monday evening.

Once the students entered the gym through a processional, student council vice president Lauren McGrath led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Next, student council president Corinne Singer gave a welcome address.

"It feels as though we were at the ice cream social on the first day of 5th grade, just yesterday, and now, we are here, ready to move onto high school," she announced, "When I asked some of you what your favorite parts and memories of middle school were, you responded with: the Freedom Trail, African Dance, 6th grade field day, the Black and White school dance, and Ceaderdale."

Singer then referenced a century-old poem by Christian D. Larson, "Promise Yourself."

One verse reads: "Promise yourself...To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best."

She made a reference to this poem to challenge listeners to seriously consider what they want to be known for in high school and beyond.

Principal Stephen R. Ralston gave his remarks next.

"As you exit the Lynnfield Middle School, you are a class full of scholars, musicians, actors, and athletes -- but more importantly -- you are a class full of friends," he said. "I am very proud of you for all of your collective and individual accomplishments over your four years here. Congratulations."

He acknowledged distinguished guests, including retiring Superintendent Robert Hassett, Dorothy Presser, School Committee chairperson, teachers, and parent volunteers who have played an important role in these students' educational career.

They stood to their feet, followed by a round of applause.

Once the chorus sang, Mr. Robert Cleary, LHS principal, accepted the class gift and class plaque.

Bella DiPetro presented the class gifts: a collection of newspaper headlines from the 1981 Tampa Tribune; a reframed, autographed poster from Christa McAullife, a teacher who died in the Challenger launch, and a space shuttle tile, which protects the shuttle from extreme heat when re-entering space -- on loan from NASA.

"These articles are all centered on the first space shuttle lanched, the Columbia, 30 years ago," she reads, "Mr. Art Kellerman, a former teacher here at Lynnfield Middle School, graciously donated these prized possessions."

DiPetro added these items hopefully will help future students appreciate and understand the school's commitment to the NASA space program -- in conjunction with education.
