Indiana University announces 2011-12 Kelley Scholars
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 28, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Ten Kelley Scholars have been selected by the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.
The Kelley Scholars, all incoming freshmen this fall who intend to major in business at IU Bloomington, will receive full tuition and fees, a stipend for living expenses and funding for academic activities such as overseas study.
The award is for four years and has an annual value of more than $16,000 for recipients who are Indiana residents and about $35,000 for non-residents.
The Kelley Scholars Program is funded by a $23 million gift from E.W. Kelley and his family, made to IU in the fall of 1997. The university named its school of business for the Kelley family in acknowledgement of the gift.
This year's class of Kelley Scholars was selected from a group of more than 500 students admitted to IU, who were invited to apply for the program because of their outstanding academic records. The application included references, a high school transcript, several personal statements on a variety of topics and an essay.

Cervantes is National Merit Finalist - LiveThank.com
About 1.5 million high school juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.
The nation-wide pool of finalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.
Cervantes stated he will attend the University of Iowa in the fall but is not sure what his major will be.
He has received a National Hispanic Provost Scholarship for $3,000 over four years and a National Merit Scholarship Finalist for $3,000.
He stated his favorite subjects during his senior year were calculus, mostly due to the instructor, Aaron Ratliff, and college English.
Car and home maintenance taught by Tim Baughman were also favorite subjects, mostly on the basis of need. “I really don’t know anything about cars,” Cervantes stated.
He stated that in the past, he took Laurel Olson’s speech and drama class as a type of personal self-improvement program.
“I like speech but am bad at public speaking,” he said. “Mrs. Olson made it easy to get up and speak to people.”
