E3 2011: Kinect Fun Labs Impressions
After announcing the Fun Labs during the Microsoft press conference they told us it would be available today to download. I downloaded it, and essentially these are just tech demos. That isn’t a bad thing. It simply shows off what the Kinect can do, and overall, is pretty impressive.
The face and body avatar scan doesn’t work right if you are too tall, in my experience. My avatar came out very Asian and the body wouldn’t fit, so although I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt, it looked like capris and a medium sleeved t-shirt. The cool part about that though is that it scanned my shirt design. I was wearing an old high school t-shirt and had it on there and everything. That has a long way to go but sort of cool if you have the right dimensions.
The only other thing available at the moment is item scanning. They have a googly eyes app where you scan anything as long as its not too small and they put googly eyes on it and you can make it dance around. The song they play while you do it is severely catchy and I wish I could download it. They have another app that also allows you scan an object, but it’s called “Build-a-Buddy” and it can move around, dance, and do other wacky things you get to decide depending on his personality. Mine shits ninja stars as you can see below. Also it is McGruff the crime dog. No particular reason for the selection. It may scare children into not doing drugs though, so you’re welcome.
Obviously you won’t be really impressed with these, but as Microsoft said at the press conference, these could lead to developers using the tech to scan pictures of your car and being able to drive it in game or as we saw when Kinect was announced, your skateboard designs.
So it will be cool to use this to see how the development team is doing with their progress and the breakthroughs they might have.
