Mt. Hebron East Baptist Church members look on as Rusty Terry returns the church's sign during their first service in a modular building after the church's building was de­stroyed in the April 27 tornado in Eclectic. In the days after the storm, members and volun­teers were able to salvage bits and pieces from the surrounding countryside: The old bell, though broken, was found in the woods nearby. Folding chairs were found scattered throughout the woods; some were beaten up, but some were usable, with a little cleaning. One of the massive wooden foundation timbers, carved out of a single tree, will hopefully find new life as part of the new church. The chapel is a boxy structure that looks like a large mobile home from the outside. Its design is sim­ple: one larger room for worship and three small rooms, one for storage and two for Sunday school, plus bathrooms. The state board usually uses these mobile chapels for new churches, but can and does use them for disaster relief, said Gary Swafford, director of the of­fice of Associational Missions and Church Planting at the state board. Certainly their sister Baptist churches have stepped in: First Baptist in Montgomery and Ridge­crest Baptist brought heavy ma­chinery and cleaned up debris; First Baptist has partnered with Mt. Hebron East to continue help­ing them as they rebuild. Harvest Fields Community Church, a new church in Deatsville that is also us­ing a mobile chapel, offered to build the steps and wheelchair ramp for Mt. Hebron East, since they'd just done it themselves.

And we kind of cemented our thing even more so then, and it was like right, we gotta work together.
