What sort of man goes around London drinking in the aroma of buses, or seeking out telephone boxes to stand in, breathing deeply? A weirdo, you might say. What if he was paid handsomely to do this?

There are descriptions for that sort of thing too, but none tend to include the word ‘fragrant’. Christopher Brosius hasn’t yet been arrested in the line of duty, but agrees that explaining his actions to a policeman might be tricky.

‘I’m sure they’d find it hilarious – if a bit odd,’ admits the laid-back American. ‘But telling them what I do for a living might confuse the issue even more.’

That is true. For Christopher is a perfumier by trade. Rich clients commission him to create the scent of their dreams. He is no ordinary perfumier, however. Not for him a workplace like a lavender field in the South of France. Christopher calls himself an ‘alternative perfumier’, and says he creates scents for ‘people who don’t like perfume’.

This means you’d be sniffing for a long time to detect a hint of freesia or vanilla in his scents. You are more likely to detect the aroma of bacon, or tobacco, or even wet dog. ‘The reaction “Eeeeuughhh!” is quite common,’ he says.

That work is about to be laid bare in a new documentary about the international perfume industry. The three-part BBC series is an attempt to go behind the scenes of this secretive world. The footage includes much meandering through lavish gardens and corridors of French châteaux.

It follows scarily groomed Parisian madames taking their daughters to choose their first fragrance. There are fashion designers charging underlings with making ‘liquid rock ’n’ roll’. And there are celebrities galore, because these are the gods on which the modern perfume business has come to depend.

And then there’s Christopher, arguably the most interesting of the lot. ‘They call me the Anti-Christ,’ he laughs. ‘There are some in this industry who think I am doing amazing things. But there are others who are, well, sniffy about it.’

His interest in the subject was born when he moved to New York from Pennsylvania in the 1980s and worked for the skincare firm Kiehls.

I like this scent – it supposedly wears different on everyone, depending on your body composition. It’s a light gardenia scent, and while I normally stick to sweeter/citrus perfumes (I can’t stand musky or elaborate scents… rose and vanilla are also scent nightmares for me), Kai is perfectly light and fragrant. It smells fresh and isn’t overbearing. The only problem with the roll-on is that it doesn’t last very long or provide a very strong application. In fact, the spray perfume also wears out quickly… I find myself spraying in the morning and reapplying with the roll on later in the day. The portability of the roll-on is perfect, but I’ve lost one before out of my clutch b/c the size is so tiny. This stuff ain’t cheap so keep an eye on it!

I bought this fragrance because of the fantastic reviews, but I have to say that I am very disappointed. I was expecting a nice tropical floral type of scent, but this has a bit of a medicinal scent to it, like cough syrup and gardenias. It didn’t smell very excellent, and after about 30 minutes, I couldn’t smell anything at all (which was okay, in fact, because I didn’t care for the scent). Also, it’s kind of expensive, especially for a fragrance that doesn’t last at all. It’s a shame, because I was really looking forwards to this one. I feel like I wasted my money on this one, and I certainly will not be buying it over again in the prospect.
