Pro-life: The new face of the modern movement

The 1973 Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade that guaranteed women's constitutional right to choose an abortion created a deep divide in American life. Recent polls now show a shifting of support between pro-choice and anti-abortion factions. Anti-abortion groups have hardened their resolve while adopting a strategy of compassion in their efforts to ban abortions. The Rev. John Jones holds Josiah Jones, 17 months old, with Shelly Jones as they attend an anti-abortion rally at Jefferson City. “This is an opportunity to see the prayers all year long and to know we are not alone to see life protected,” John Jones said. The Statehouse is the scene of several rallies each year by groups on both sides of the abortion issue.

“I’m just here to get birth control."

A man pipes up about health risks of the pill.

Johnson counters: “I’ve used birth control for years. I’m fine.”

Another man chimes in: “Do you know this is an abortion clinic?”

“Yeah, I know." She sounds defensive. "I’m pro-choice."

A woman calls back: “Can you explain why you’re pro-choice?”

Johnson's response is clipped: “I don’t want to be a slave to my uterus for the rest of my life."

A pause, then another voice from the crowd: “There are other places you can go for birth control.”

Bingo!

For a few minutes of role playing in early April, the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Jefferson City stood in for the entrance of an abortion clinic. A group of anti-abortion advocates became “sidewalk counselors.” And Abby Johnson played Any Woman, stopping in at Planned Parenthood to renew her birth control.

In this tableau, Johnson was both teacher and star. For eight years, she worked at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas, eventually becoming director of the clinic. She quit two years ago, after watching an ultrasound during an abortion, in which she says she saw a 13-week-old fetus “fight for its life."

She has since become the chief research strategist for Live Action, a youth-led anti-abortion group , and also supports sidewalk campaigns led by the faith-based group, 40 Days for Life .

This spring, she was in mid-Missouri coaching pro-life advocates on the use of effective dialogue in anti-abortion campaigns.

Prayers for Lent 2011 « saints and sunflowers

This Lent I knew I needed to practice a regular discipline, in part because I recognized that I was going through a dry zone —  a time when its  difficult to come to my own words.  Back in February,  Lent just seemed so long…and the prospects seemed dry as those bones that Ezekiel talks about.  In past dry bone zones, what helped nurture me spiritually was the regularity  of a liturgy like morning prayer, or some reflections and prayers from someone other than me.  So how to go broader and deeper in Lent 2011?   I turned to a group I have known now for over 2 years, and a group that I hoped could provide some living breath for me, the congregation of Luther Place.  Over the last couple of Lents, we have pulled together devotionals for the congregation, yet this Lent was the first time that we had all 40 days  covered by 40 different people .   I decided to use a devotion a day, then I added one more feature,  to pray for the writer of the day throughout the day, and to let them know my prayer by writing a note. Over the 40 days, I marveled at the way God speaks through such a wonderful mix of people at Luther Place.  There were reflections that were spot on for where I was that day, and there were other days where I had to stop and take my time digesting reflections.  Even when the notes I wrote were late,  I did keep up day by day praying for the various writers. I was surprised when I got notes from other quadrants in my life from friends who wrote that they were compelled to pray for me.  I got a note from someone  at Luther Place who was pleased that I was writing notes,  and she wrote to me thinking that I might want one too… The web of prayer grew and was strong enough to carry me and my bones through Lent, to the other side of the 40 days, to Easter — to resurrection where dry bones are drawn together by God to make new life and new words.
