LEADVILLE — This place gets called lots of names.

  Some, like “Two-Mile-High City,” are descriptive. Others, such as “Cloud City” and “Magic City,” are exotic.

  And several are not repeated in polite company.

  One well-deserved — and socially acceptable — sobriquet is “Museum Capital of Colorado.” Few communities can rival Leadville’s ratio of one museum for every 460 or so residents; its half-dozen establishments range from a Victorian-era boardinghouse to the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum, America’s only federally chartered mining museum.

  Each reflects the colorful history of the frontier West’s wildest, richest silver camp.

 Leadville’s glory days, and its museums, are intimately connected with the saga of flamboyant silver baron Horace Austin Warner (H.A.W.) Tabor.  A forerunner of today’s randy, implosion-prone public officials, Tabor helped found Leadville, North America’s highest incorporated city (elevation 10,152 feet), and served as its first mayor.  He was also Colorado’s lieutenant governor and a U.S. senator before his escapades canceled out decades of civic contributions and destroyed his political career.

  The Tabor soap opera began in 1878, one year prior to Leadville’s incorporation, when Tabor struck it rich after “grubstaking” or financially backing two prospectors who staked a claim east of the city at what became the celebrated Little Pittsburg silver mine.
