The challenge: Can a web startup take on brick-and-mortar pet food retailers?

What they did: Serial entrepreneurs Alex Zhardanovsky and Joe Speiser tapped their web marketing expertise to create what they call the "Netflix of pet food." Using $5 million from a stake in a previous startup, they launched PetFlow in New York City in late 2009. Their model: regular delivery of a variety of pet food -- including natural, hard-to-find brands like Blue Buffalo and Fromm -- for a flat $4.95 shipping rate for orders up to $59; above that shipping is free.

To maintain steady revenues, they focus on food rather than one-time purchases like pet toys. Today PetFlow converts about 50% of new customers to auto-shipping deals (mostly women tired of lugging heavy bags from stores). PetFlow says monthly revenue hit almost $1 million in April, up 85% since January.

What is a cheap(er) dog food with healthy ingredients? - Buy Cheap ...

SD is a moderately priced food. What you need to ask yourself is do you actually care about your dog. If you don’t care about it, go and get a cheap food. You will get what you pay for.

However, if you do love your pet like it is family, you should feed it as such. I have a yellow lab and bull mastiff, and they get Blue Buffalo.

I feed them less (about 10-20% less than SD), so it is cheaper in the long run, and they are healthy with beautiful coats and muscle tone.

Science Diet is crap quality food. Period.

You want to stay away from most brand names – Iams, Purina, Pedigree, anything in a grocery store or wal-mart – because they all contain corn (which is undigestible by carnivores – dogs – and a known allergen) and by-products (parts of animals that contain no nutrition.)

You want something with NAMED meats and meat meals, veggies, quality LOW grains, and no fillers or anything mentioned above.

California Natural and Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul are two decent, lower cost foods. But if you feed GOOD quality you tend to SAVE in the long run – less vet bills related to poor diet (skin issues, ear infections, etc.)

Other brands: Wellness, Innova, Taste of the Wild.

It’s not that expensive and it’s not that good. Dogs are not cheap and you shouldn’t be cutting corners on your dog’s nutrition. It’ll only come back as a medical expense later. Spend the money and get a good food. If you must limit this expense at least go with Blue Buffalo. It’s a good food you can get at Petsmart and PETCO. You waste money buying cheap food because the nutrition is less so you end up using more of it. With a high quality food, you can actually feed less because the nutritional value is much higher.

I feed my dogs Purina. Purina is far from the best food. However my dogs have been eating it for years and they are – 10 years old, 5 years old, 1 1/2 years, 10 months old, and 6 months old. All are in great health because they go to the vet regularly. They weigh between 28 lbs and 5 lbs. All except for the 5 pounder are right at their ideal weight. Science Diet is actually on the cheap side when it comes to dog food and isnt hardly any better than Purina. Dont buy an grocery store like Walmart foods, they are all cheap and about the same quality. Go buy dog food at Tractor Supply. They have a great selection and carry all different brands ranging from Pedigree, Retriever the store brand, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Taste of the Wild, Purina Pro Plan and more and arent priced too bad either. Every now and then I buy my dogs a more premium food there sometimes.
