'O say, can you see?'

Jimi Hendrix gave it a psychedelic overhaul in 1969.

Marvin Gaye put a soulful spin on it in 1983.

Whitney Houston injected it with a power-vocalist charge in 1991.

And more recently, Carrie Underwood and Faith Hill have countrified it.

Renditions by these recording artists are widely considered to be among the most memorable performances of “The Star-Spangled Banner” ever.

But for Sean O’Donnell, a music teacher at Bay View Elementary School, an amateur choir of middle- and high-school students delivered the “most moving” National Anthem performance he’s ever heard.

It happened during a Veterans Day ceremony in Ewing Township, N.J. just a few weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

“It had a direct impact on our community and the mood was somber,” said O’Donnell, who at the time was a choral director in that school system, not far from New York City.

“It was more emotional because of the vibe in the town. We were more conscious of what we were singing, what the words meant,” he said.

The arrangement wasn’t spectacular as far as frills go. And the singing of it, while certainly melodically and harmonically in tune, wasn’t stellar.

It was just a straightforward performance that, according to O’Donnell, was buoyed by one key element of a stirring National Anthem: “Part of it depends on where and when it is taking place,” O’Donnell said.

Along those lines, Fair Hill resident Jack Foreaker vividly remembers Whitney Houston dynamically performing it before Super Bowl XXV in 1991.

Houston delivered her stirring rendition just 10 days after the United States entered the Persian Gulf War, for which thousands of military troops were deployed to the Middle East.

Consequently, patriotism among the fans inside Tampa Stadium was soaring, and Houston benefited from that prevailing spirit.

“She held pretty true to the tune and she nailed it. She made it her own,” said Foreaker, who has sung the National Anthem twice before Baltimore Orioles games at Camden Yards.

Foreaker also recalls that the Florida stadium was resplendent with miniature U.S. flags that most of the fans there waved as Houston sang.

Afton Price, a music teacher at Bohemia Manor Middle School, also believes that an ideal setting can help any National Anthem performer – famous or not – raise goose bumps.

“Anytime students get to perform ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ for Veterans Day or some other patriotic event, there is a lot of pride in that performance. You can just tell it means more,” he said.

The Consumer Product and Safety Commission started an investigation last week into serious burn incidents connected to gel fuel that is used in firepots.

While the investigation is still ongoing, consumers should be aware of the potential hazards including severe burn injuries can occur from using illuminating fuels in firepots , tiki torches, and other products.  Given the number of serious burn injuries reported over the past couple of weeks, you should strongly consider not using these products at all. As evidenced in the attachment, Bed Bath and Beyond has pulled the product from its shelf pending the CPSC investigation.   CPSC staff suggests that a person never refuel a hot product as this can burn those nearby by causing the fuel to splatter. Adding fuel to an open-flame is a potentially hazardous activity, with a risk of uncontrolled fires and severe burns.  

The safety commission also said it is important to follow proper safety guidelines when refueling any open-flame device. CPSC staff suggested that consumers first look for flames, then carefully feel the surrounding area of the flame, as flames are sometimes difficult to see. Only add fuel when the flames are extinguished and the container is cold to the touch.

Never dispense fuel over an open flame.

Consumers should keep the fuel out of the reach of young children and when not in use, store it in a safe place away from children. Make sure you always firmly replace the child resistant cap after use.

Most illuminating fuels are sold in special child-resistant packaging because they generally contain a specific class of chemicals. This class of chemicals is hazardous if ingested and pushed into the lungs, where it can cause chemical pneumonia, pulmonary edema, or death . Illuminating fuels should never be moved to other containers, as young children may mistake the new container with a common drink item.
