Private Edgewater airport caters to enthusiasts, businesses
EDGEWATER -- When Joe Martin was looking to open an aviation engineering business in the late 1980s, there was only one place he looked -- Massey Ranch Airpark.
"I couldn't own the land at the other airports, only lease it," said the former engineering teacher at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach and owner of East Volusia Engineering. "If I was going to build something, I wanted to own the dirt underneath and Massey was the only game in town."
That's the main difference and attraction to Edgewater's privately owned airport, said Bliss Jamison, a broker with Massey Properties.
Jamison is married to John Massey, a managing member of Massey Enterprises, the airpark's parent company and developer.
"We're a private airport open to the general aviation public and we can sell the land. At government airports, they lease the land and anything you build belongs to the airport when you leave," she said.
"Businesses can also come here and negotiate in private, out of the Sunshine Laws," Jamison added. "We're also different in that we have a mix of residential on the east side and commercial/industrial on the west side. That's been the concept since the beginning."
Max Massey built the 200-acre airport and got it licensed in 1957.
"He built it with a grass runway and the family tells stories of pulling out roots and stumps," Jamison said. "The Masseys set the stage for everything. They got things started by building and selling the first T-hangars and a couple of homes and then just selling the land for others to develop."
Max's children, John, airpark manager Dale, Dorian and Marcia Farwell now handle the Massey business and land empire that includes more than 400 vacant acres west of the airpark to Old Mission Road. That space is mostly woods, but is home to Everglades Boats.
The Masseys also own about 70 acres at Parktowne Industrial Park to the east of the airpark. The airpark and city-built industrial center represent two of Edgewater's larger industrial areas.
"The airpark is a great asset for the city providing jobs and a commercial and industrial base for aviation and non-aviation business," Edgewater City Manager Tracey Barlow said. "And the city taxpayers are not on the hook for any of its expenses. We don't have to worry about a tower or runway maintenance."
Runway maintenance is up to the Masseys and the airpark property owners. The lone north-south runway was paved with asphalt in 1998 and helped spur the development of hangars and homes.
