Ranches In Texas

Gage established wealth in open spaces

Alfred Stevens Gage was 19 years old when he first saw Texas.

The son of Newton and Olivia Arnold Gage, Alfred was raised in Ascutneyville, Vt., graduated from high school in Windsor, Vt., in 1878 and headed to the Texas frontier.

His half-brother, Edward L. Gage, who was 14 years older than Alfred, had graduated from Dartmouth College and was well established as a land locator in Dallas in partnership with E.M. Powell, also a land locator and real estate agent.

"Based on the glowing letters which Edward had been writing relative to opportunities and activities in Texas, young Alfred was fascinated with the wide open spaces," according to the Brewster County history book.

For a brief time, Alfred lived with Edward in Dallas before going to work on a ranch in Shackelford County for $12 per month, according to the Handbook of Texas Online.

He later purchased a small ranch on the Little Wichita River in Archer County but sold it in 1882 after cattle rustlers stole his 40 head of foundation livestock.

It was about this time that Edward had accumulated railroad land in the Big Bend and Trans-Pecos. He offered Alfred a job of managing the ranching operation.

Later, Alfred recalled his ride to Marathon. He told a friend about offering to pay the various families with whom he stayed along the route, but no one had change for the $20 gold piece that represented his entire fortune, so he arrived in Marathon as wealthy as when he set out, relates one account.

In the meantime, Edward and his associates organized the Presidio Live Stock Company. The officers of the company were Edward Gage, president and general manager; S.A. Thompson, vice president; Seth N. Gage, secretary and treasurer; and Alfred Gage, superintendent.

During the late 1880s, a drought and depression forced the Presidio Live Stock Company to reorganize and the name was changed to the Alpine Cattle Co. After his brother committed suicide in 1892, Alfred Gage was chosen as manager and continued in the position until 1912, when he acquired all outstanding shares.

The name of Alpine Cattle Co. was dropped and the business stationery carried the heading: Alfred S. Gage, Cattle, Ranches in Brewster and Pecos Counties.

Gage continued to add to his land holdings in the Big Bend and Trans-Pecos region, with the greater portion of ranch land located along the Southern Pacific Railroad.

Early in the 20th century Gage moved to San Antonio, where he served on numerous boards including the Lockwood National Bank and the Frost Bank.
