Going Deep: Development camp is the first step to the NHL
Steve Pinizzotto didn’t lack confidence when he signed as a college free agent with the Washington Capitals in 2007.The winger had produced 95 points in 48 games one season with Oakville in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League and had amassed 44 points in 34 games during his final season at Rochester Institute of Technology.
But Pinizzotto’s first experience with Washington’s development camp the summer after he signed was an eye opener.
“I don’t know if star-struck is the word, but that’s kind of how you feel,” Pinizzotto said. “Everyone wants to go to the NHL, and that’s your first step.
“A lot of nerves. That’s where you start learning about the pros and the coaches and the way they coach.”
Development camps are a weeklong version of freshman orientation for NHL clubs.
Draft picks and prospects get introduced to new teams and new surroundings. Undrafted players get invited for close-up scouting that might result in a contract offer.
“It’s an orientation and an education for the players and an opportunity for them to get to know some of the people in the organization,” Caps GM George McPhee said. “We have all hands on deck when we do it.
“For coaches and management, it’s an opportunity to get some idea of what you have.”
Development camps are limited to a week in length. There’s no technical roster limit, but rosters tend to range from 35 to 40 for practical reasons; teams want enough players to run full scrimmages but not so many that the numbers become unwieldy.
“The pro game is so much different,” Hershey Bears head coach Mark French said. “Every aspect of your development is so much more scrutinized. It’s a whole new world for them.”
HARD SKATE
Washington’s 2011 development camp is scheduled for July 11-16 at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va.
Caps head coach Bruce Boudreau takes a front-line, on-ice role in running the camp.

The BTB45 Paleo Challenge begins 7.12.11. - Nutrition, Performance ...
Welcome. The BTB45 is a 45-day nutrition and performance challenge. It is based on principles of the Paleolithic Diet, modern day life, science, and practical experience. Do not look at this “challenge” as a one-time thing to see if you can win. Look at it as a jumping off point for a continued healthy lifestyle.
During the first 30 days of this challenge, you are expected to be “strict” and not stray from the guidelines. Not only do you need to have some self-discipline to carry through on this endeavor, but it is also an exercise in character. Everything is published to the group, and only you will know if you are being honest.
From day 30-45, you may want to experiment a little by adding some dairy or some additional fruit into your diet. You may want to add in a cheat meal or some wine with dinner. Many choose not to. You may be surprised by the reaction your body has to adding certain things back into your diet that you have eliminated for 30 days. Many of us discover allergies and intolerances that we didn’t even know we had. Grains and Legumes are still an absolute no-no.
Judging the Contest. Participants will be choosing the winners this go-round using the criteria below:
