Va. Beach police officer/boxer is fighting the good fight
VIRGINIA BEACH
It was a slow night in the fourth precinct. The streets and the radio were quiet. Master Police Officer Frankie Filippone drove his squad car along Princess Anne Road, where the conversation turned to his second job.
Filippone works with his hands. OK, with his fists. A super middleweight boxer with a 6-2 professional record, he fights tonight on a card at the Virginia Beach Field House.
There are parallels between his two vocations, Filippone said. The camaraderie and mutual respect among peers in the precinct and gym are similar. In both jobs, training, experience and the rituals of preparation give him a fighting chance of getting home unhurt.
The cop dons a bulletproof vest and straps on a gun. The fighter wraps his hands and pops in a mouthpiece. In both lines of work, vigilance is paramount because, after all, you never know.
No two nights are the same. No two fights are the same. What more could a guy who hums with energy want?
"The action," Filippone said. "You can't beat that. You can't get that sitting home watching TV."
He was talking about police work now, but he could have been referring to boxing. Outgoing and friendly, he dives into both tasks head-on. In a pair of professions that suffer their share of public relations black eyes, he's a one-man goodwill offensive.
"How's the park looking?" he said, rolling down his window and greeting a pair of young women pushing a baby stroller. Filippone had pulled into a development of tired-looking townhomes in an area not far from where he and his partner recovered a stash of drugs and guns. He patrols the area, often on a bike, as part of the precinct's Community Oriented Policing unit.
The women looked skeptical and seemed inclined to keep moving. Filippone flashed a smile.
"That wood is scary - there are nails sticking out," one of them finally said.
"Any graffiti?" he asked.
"There's some on the wood, on the jungle gym."
Filippone said he'd notify the community association.
"We're always here if you need us," he said.
Filippone drove on, satisfied that he'd made a connection.
"Those two people there - they'll remember that encounter, versus if I just drove by," he said. "This is what makes a difference."
Filippone is by nature and job description not a drive-by kind of guy. Around the fourth, he's jokingly known as "Officer Friendly." He's part of a unit created to solve problems across the precinct, headquartered in Kempsville. Or better yet, head off problems before they occur by gaining the trust of the community.
